Taupo and Rotorua
Fly Fishing Reports

Spring 2011
Christmas is coming fast. Spring has been a mixed bag. But with things heating up expect the fish to up near the surface soon either taking light nymphs and dry flies. The local rivers have still had the odd run of spawning trout. With that winding down the now focus on the backcountry rivers for resident trout and on the local rivers targeting hungry mending trout.

Winter 2011
Its august already. Amazing to see snow in Taupo. good news the trout running up the local rivers are definitely a little bigger than the last few years. Good news that the fishery is on the mend. The runs have been good at times and as I write this the rivers are again getting low and clear. Good anglers will still catch fish in these conditions but you have to work for them. We should see the best runs coming through in the coming weeks.
Winter 2010
Well it is mid August and it is starting to feel like spring. We have had some good runs of spawning run trout and we can certainly expect a few more good ones. Managed a fish in the backcountry with a client a few weeks ago. What a great day. We didn't see another angler even on a Saturday. Its easy to forget how good we have got it in this country. Looking forward to summer fishing again.

Autumn
After 6 weeks with out rain it finally came. Sending rainbows up all the major rivers running into Lake Taupo. The rain was well needed and has given backcountry rivers a good bit of flow as well. May has been relatively warm so far and fishing conditions quite pleasant. Browns have been a little tough to catch as can happen this time of year but rainbows are still feeding nicely. Quite noticeably already the spawning trout are definitely bigger this year. Great news. The rainbow on the left was a from the Tongariro and weighed 5 3/4 Lbs.
Aug
Well things have finally started to fire up on the local rivers. The rain we have had over the last two weeks has started to get the fish running in all the rivers. On the last couple of trips we have had some good fishing on the Hinemaiaia. fish size is still down with many fish around the 2Lb mark. But still great fun.

The new year has arrived and the weather has been
some of the warmest on record. Most rivers have dropped to summer
flows and offer good fishing with nymphs and dry flies. Nymphing
has been most successful with my favourite nymph being a chocolate
brown pheasant tail wit uv hotspot. After a wet winter some
of the spring creeks are just starting to drop now and will
provide good fishing troughout the summer. A couple of pics
from last month.

Nov/Dec
The months are flying by and soon it will be
Christmas. Good signs for the summer head. The local rivers
are fishing better than they have all winter. A half day trip
on the Tongariro this week saw us hook 6 fish and land three.
Even saw one wily brown that was too quick spitting the fly
out for us to get a hook up. These are normally one cast one
chance fish. Expect good fishing in these rivers to continue
up until Christmas. There has also been a few afternoon hatches
so dry flys at the ready for this. Try using an Irristable Adams
or a Iron Blue Dun. Backcountry rivers - As the winter flows
settle down there will be some great fishing up to Christmas.
December being traditioanlly a good fish numbers month. Also
in the favour orf this is the drop in Tourist numbers. A few
les anglers on the rivers may make things a little easier later
in the season.

Aug/Sep
Well all going well the rain may finally be over.
The amount of rain received in Aug was around 1.5 times the normal
amount. Things are looking good for September with the next ran
likely to bring a good run of trout up the rivers. Over the last
few years the spawning runs have peaked in September. This year
looks like it will be no different. I expect the fishing to be
good in the local rivers right through until Christmas. Size seems
to be down but still some great fish to be caught.
